Hello, my name is Yami Arellano and I am a first-generation college student on the Pre-PA track. I come from immigrant parents who are originally from Guerrero, Mexico. I take pride in being a first-generation college student as it has brought not only myself, but my family and my small hometown back at home very proud.
My family in Guerrero, Mexico has a sugar cane business which I would have inherited if I was not living in America. Sugar cane is grown on our lands until it is ready to be cut down by workers. Piles of sugar canes are taken to local manufacturers that process and juice the cane crop. I recently visited in 2017 for the first time, which was a very exciting experience. While I am proud of what my family has created and upheld over generations, I am grateful that I have the opportunity to branch out and pursue a career of my choice.
